Hansgrohe Superprestige Cross in Hoogstraaten (BEL) Sunday, Fuebruary 10th 2013

Shit happens…

On Sunday in Hoogstraten, the frozen course we had last year did have some snow on it, but was covered mostly by mud and icy water, which made it very hard for the legs and the bikes. The parking for the riders was out of order because of the mud, so we had to park far away from the circuit and the warmup had to be cut down in order to make it in time to the start. This resulted in me not being very well during the first lap. After a first bikechange, I found my rhythm and was catching back riders. Unfortunately, just after I passed the pits the cable of my gearshifter broke and the chain fell off to the heaviest gear. The gear was impossible to get around in the deep terrain, so I had to run a lot and could only get on my bike in the short downhillls. I lost so much time and places that I prefered to quit the race when I arrived at the second pits. I’m very sorry for the organisator, but under such conditions it was wiser to give a rest to my back. Startnumber 13 really isn’t a lucky number for me!
