Nationals in Cessange (LUX) January 12th 2014

SUZIE (2nd) AND TRIXY (3rd) ON THE PODIUM.

A race without any real suspense as it was pretty sure from the start that professional rider Christine Majerus (who aims a top 15 or maybe a top 10 place at the worlds in Hoogerheide) was clearly above the rest of us.

You simply can’t compare the form of a fulltime rider who makes a living of her passion to that of a working teacher with a family who races mainly for fun.

Still, it was a very special race for me because I stood on a podium together with my daughter Trixy. No one can ever take that from us even it it seems such an “easy” thing to do as we were only four girls to take the start. However, as the french say «  les absents ont toujours tort »: we have both had a good cyclo-cross season and this podium was a beautifiul reward for all the efforts.

The lap in Cessange (usually very fast) had been transformed in a deep mudfield, but it was still rideable (fortunately for me I didn’t need to run!). We were supposed to ride over 30’, starting 2’ after the boys. But during the race, the officials suddenly decided to give us one more lap, so that we had to ride 40’ (official international time for the women). This didn’t bother me, but it was hard for poor young Chloe Delli Zotti and for Trixy too, not because of the 40 minutes (which she is used to) but because she refused to change bike (she loves her new Guerciotti so much and she didn’t dare to change) and had to struggle with some mechanical problems in the last lap.

Winner of the race Christine Majerus (Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team) with Suzie and Trixy on the Podium

Unlike the last two races in Rome and Surhuisterveen, I had a good start and managed to stay in contact with Christine for about half a lap, until she increased speed and her advance grew continously. All of us were then left on our own. From second lap onwards I caught back some of the boys started 2’ before us, which was a good motivation to keep giving it a 100% . In the third lap, I made some minor mistakes in two mud parts and had to get off my bike, but I improved in lap 4 catching back 3 more of the boys. The last lap was just a lonely ride to the finish as the boys finished at 4 laps and I had real problems to keep the rhythm as high. But my staff ( my husband Marc and my son Fränz, thank you guys !) was very satisfied with my ride and  so was I. I regained my ability to fight and concentrate on the ride instead of worring. I really want to thank everyone who cheered for me all over the lap, it was great hearing you !!!

The first time for Trixy on a Podium as rider with her mother in Cessange, January 12, 2014,.....

and back in time ....

... January 12, 1997 in Junglinster first national title for Suzie with Trixy and Fränz (Trixy's mechanic on the yesterday's race).

After the race, it was very emotional for me to be standing on that podium with my daughter Trixy. It’s really the best a mom can hope for.

Congratulations to the old and new champion Christine (whos age makes just the age difference between Trixy and I) and best wishes for her for the worlds!

Now all that’s left for me to do is just to enjoy the last races of the season ( Gran Premio Mamma e Papa Guerciotti, Lille, Hoogstraten, Middelkerke, Heerlen and the Sluitingsprijs in Oostmalle)!
