Race in Heusden (Gent, BEL), August 10th 2013

A bit more than 70 riders on the start for a race that I found quite pleasant with two bridges to pass out of saddle and some « Klinkerkasseien », a short lap (5km) where the audience gets to see the riders about every 7-8’ and which gives the opportunity for numerous attacks.

The race started immediately after 1 km when two riders went away with zero reaction coming from the bunch. Result : 1’ lead after 5km. But after two laps, the bunch decided to react and in one lap, everything was grouped again. During the 18 laps, there were numerous attacks, but none would really last for more than 2-3 laps. I tried to get away three times myself, my longest attack lasting 2 laps.

Ultimately, it was a grouped bunch that attacked the final lap where I tried to keep a good position for the sprint. When the girls started to sprint, I was in a rather good position to follow, but a girl on my left touched the wheel of another one in front of her, crossed over to the right and finally crashed on the sidewalk just in front of me.

I managed to avoid a crash, but I lost all my speed and passed the line on a good but nevertheless disappointing 28th place.
