Cyclo-Cross World-Cup Roma Capitale (ITA), 05.01.14

Could've been worse for a first!

So as I said, after Surhuisterveen, we thought that Rome, being so far south, would be sunshine and dry ground. It wasn't the case. The sky was overcast, the clouds hung low on Saturday and on Sunday morning, it was pouring rain. The under 23 men got soaked during the race and the lap was a muddy mess. As it turned out however, the muddy mess was favorable for me, because it made the lap less fast and allowed me to NOT GET LAPPED by best riders female cyclo-cross has to offer.

Marianne Vos and Katie Compton were the battling titans that dominated the race, and it was italian champion Eva Lechner who took third place. As for me, I stuggled through the 4 laps as well as I could, feeling the lack of strength each time I got onto the fast parts of the lap. I finished last of the 27 riders, with 9 minutes backlog on winner Katie Compton.

Some might say that finishing last is not something to be proud of, but my goal was not to get lapped. I didn't get lapped and for a first world-cup, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been (Haters don't waste your time!).

Grazie Italia for this amazing experience and now onto the last race of the season (how come it's already the last one??), Nationals in Cessange.
